So that’s why I wanted to だから人生のどこかのタイミングで go study abroad at some point in my life. 留学に行きたいって思ったんです。 I was lucky because I started with something easy. 簡単なことから始められたのでラッキーでした。 I feel like it’s similar to how kids learn. 子どもが英語を学ぶのと似ている気がします。 She’s more American than I am! 彼女は私よりアメリカンよ！ Hey guys, it’s Chika! みなさんこんにちは、ちかです！ I have some friends with me here today. 今日は友達がお家に来てくれています！ Hey guys… こんにちは You guys have actually seen all of them before in my videos. 実は、みんな以前、動画に登場してくれた方々なんです！ We’ve talked about English learning 英語学習についてお話しをしたのですが and they’re all here together today! なんと、今日はみんなここに集まっているんです！ And Hana’s actually here from Virginia Beach. はなちゃんはバージニアビーチから来てくれています！ Hello! ハロー！ You might have seen them in my videos already, 動画で知っている方もいるかもしれませんが but let me introduce them. 紹介しますね。 Next we have Hana chan. 次は、はなちゃん Hello. こんにちは！ And last but not least, we have Ayami san. そして、最後はあやみさん！ Hi! ハイ！ Just to remind everyone, 念の為に言っておきますが you guys all were born and raised in Japan みんな日本生まれ、日本育ちで and you started studying English in Japan. 日本で英語を学んだんだよね？ Mmhm! そう！ You were born and raised in Shimane. はなちゃんは生まれも育ちも島根で… Yup! Shimane native. そう！島根ネイティブ So yeah, no excuses! だから、言い訳できないですよ！ All right, we’re gonna talk all in English, 全部英語で行くので so get ready. 準備はいいですか？ Are you guys ready? 心の準備はOK？ I’m ready. Ready! 大丈夫！大丈夫！ First, I wanna ask you guys 最初に、聞きたいのが why you started learning English. 英語を学ぼうと思ったきっかけ。 Who’s gonna go first? Who’s gonna go first? 誰が最初に行く？ Okay. どうぞ So my reason is very simple. 僕の理由はとても単純でした。 When I was 13, I started to learn English. 13歳の時に英語を学び始めたんです。 And at that time I wasn’t very popular among girls 当時は、女の子にモテなくて and many of my friends started to go out with girls 友達がたくさん女の子と付き合い始めたんですよ。 and I was very jealous. それでめっちゃ嫉妬して And so I was like, oh, I gotta get ready. おぉ、「俺もなんか準備しないと」みたいな My face is not very handsome. そんなイケメンでもないので I gotta, you know, brush up my… こりゃ磨かないといけないぞって inside. 内面を Get some skills. 何かしらスキルを Yeah, get some skills. そうです。 And one day I was watching tv, MTV, ある日、テレビを見ていたらMTVで many artists were speaking English たくさんのアーティストが英語を話していて and I was like, "oh, that would be cool!" 「おぉ、これはかっこいいぞ」と And I started listening to Western songs. それで洋楽を聴き始めました。 Maroon 5, Michael Jackson, the Black Eyed Peas マルーン5、マイケル・ジャクソン、ブラック・アイド・ピーズ And you can sing most of them. ほとんど歌えちゃうもんね Well thank you. ありがとう You’re very handsome by the way. そしてイリちゃん、とてもイケメンだからね I was gonna say. Yeah! 私も言おうと思ったの！ But that was Irichan. こちらがイリちゃんの答えでした。 Thank you for sharing that. シェアしてくれてありがとう！ Okay, who wants to go next? 次は誰がいく？ I’ll go next. Okay. 私が行こうかな。 Mine’s kind of similar to Irichan actually, 私の理由はイリちゃんと少し似ていて ’cause I was into High School Musical ハイスクール・ミュージカルが好きで and from that, I started listening to a lot of Western music. そこから洋楽をたくさん聞くようになったんです。 And my dad was actually in love with Michael Jackson 父が実はマイケル・ジャクソンとか… and..who’s singing the September? セプテンバー歌っているの誰だっけ？ Earth, wind and Fire! アース・ウィンド＆ファイヤー！ Yeah, I was into like music like that too. その年代の音楽も好きだったんだけど But then I couldn’t really listen and understand the lyrics 音楽を聴いて、歌詞を理解することが出来なかったから and I started learning lyrics 学校で英語を習っているタイミングで at the same time I was learning English in school. 歌詞を学び始めたんです。 So I was kind of like putting things together, （学んでいることと歌詞を）照らし合わせて trying to understand the lyrics. 理解しようと頑張っていたら And from that, I feel like listening skill went up really high. そこからリスニング力がグンと伸びたんです。 I feel like it’s similar to how kids learn 子どもが学ぶのと似ている気がします ’cause they start from listening to their moms 子どもってお母さん、お父さんが and dads speaking English. 英語を話しているのを聞いて学ぶから You guys have similarities? 2人とも似ている部分があるね Yeah. What about you Ayami? あやみさんはどう？ That! それ！ I kind of relate 私も共感できるの ’cause I was listening to them, "oh yeah. Oh yeah." 2人の話を聞きながら、「そう、そう！」って And that reminds me of, "I was listening to music too, actually." 「私も音楽聴いてたなぁ」って思い出して Like when I was in high school I started listening to 私も高校生の頃洋楽をたくさん聞き始めて those Western music a lot. 私も高校生の頃洋楽をたくさん聞き始めて And then that is also part of the reason それがアメリカの文化に興味がある理由の一つですね。 that I’m interested in American culture in general. それがアメリカの文化に興味がある理由の一つですね。 That was a very fun way to study English. 洋楽から英語を学ぶのが楽しかったんです。 But first, I just listened to English でも英語を最初に聞いた時は and (I was) like, it sounds cool. 「あ、響きがかっこいいな」って思ったんです。 I can’t say it anymore. これ以上表せれないけれど It’s just cool. It sounded cool. ただただかっこいい！な、 I wanted to be able to speak English. 英語を話せるようになりたいなって。 And, and a lot of people, I think, きっとたくさんの人、 a lot of you guys watching probably think that. 動画を見てくれている多くのみんながそう思っているよね Like English just sounds cool 英語ってかっこいいな、とか or like, you know, they like American culture アメリカの文化っていいな、って Osaru san is like that as well. おさるさんもそう思っているから So I think at the start line you, you know, だから、スタートラインは you guys are very similar to everyone 英語を学び始めようとしている人と starting to learn English. 変わらないんだよね。 But here you are! でもこの成果！ Why were you able to continue learning? なんで英語学習を続けられたの？ Was it just fun? 楽しかったから？ Did you find English fun from the beginning? 最初から英語学習が楽しいって思えた？ Yeah. Yeah. Mmhm. うん。そうだね。 Yeah. Me, too. 私も。 That’s it. はい、終わり！笑 So you found the learning process fun. 学ぶっていう工程が楽しかったんだ？ For me, I had my favorite teacher, 私は大好きな先生がいて and I wanted her to see that 100 number on my test. 先生にテストの100点っていう数字を見せたかったんです。 Uh huh. あ〜 I wanted to prove that I’m like really liking English 先生に私が本当に英語が好きで and I like you and I wanna show what I can do. I guess? 先生も好きで、自分の成果を見せたかったのかな？ So that was in high school. それが高校生の時だよね？ Yeah. Okay. はい。なるほど And I think you’ve mentioned a nice teacher too あやみさんも先生のこと言ってたよね？ We talked a little bit. 少しお話ししたけれど Yeah. I started going to the English lessons そうですね、5年生の時に英語のレッスンを受け始めたんです。 when I was in the fifth grade. そうですね、5年生の時に英語のレッスンを受け始めたんです。 Just, you know, an English teacher happened to たまたま英語の先生が近くに住んでいたので live in the neighborhood. たまたま英語の先生が近くに住んでいたので I just went there and just, 行くことにしたんだけれど、 he was very, very encouraging. その先生がすごく励まし上手で And whenever I said, he was like, "oh you’re doing great!" 「頑張ってるね！」って言ってくれる度に So like, "okay, am I good?" 「わたし、上手なの？」って And that really motivated me, それがすごくモチベーションになって and then he showed me some like Christmas cards 先生がアメリカに住んでいる友達からもらった from his friend who lived in America. クリスマスカードを見せてくれたんだけれど It was all written in English obviously, and all cursive. もちろん全て筆記体の英語で書いてあったんだけど That was just very fascinating. それにすごく魅了されたんです。 I just wanted to understand, 分かるようになりたいな、 I wanted to communicate with people abroad. 海外の人とコミュニケーション取りたいなって思ったんです。 So that’s probably, yeah. それが理由かな？ So there’s a want there that like I want to do it. 「やりたい！」っていう気持ちがあるんだね Yeah, want, want, want. そう、「英語を学びたい」って気持ち！ What about you Irichan? イリちゃんはどう？ Was there a teacher or someone? 先生とか誰かいたの？ What I did was, I got the textbook from school 僕がやったのは、学校の教科書がありますよね And I thought my pronunciation was good. 自分の発音がいいと思っていたので It was not actually. 実際は全然でしたが But I thought it was good. そう思っていたんですね So I brought the textbook to my grandmother and read it aloud. だから、教科書を祖母のところに持って行って音読したんです。 And of course my grandmother didn’t understand もちろん、祖母は何を言っているか分かっていませんでした what I was saying, 祖母は何を言っているか分かっていませんでした but she was like, "oh you are…" けど、「お前は大したもんだ」って言うので and I felt good! 気分が良かったんです！ And she gave me motivation. 祖母にモチベーションをもらっていました。 That’s a new one. これは新しいパターン！ Go read your English textbook to your grandmother. おばあちゃんに英語の教科書を読む！ Yup. That’ll do. それで出来るようになる！笑 But yeah, being.. encouragement! Right! 励ましてもらうこと！そう！ Right. そうだね What was the most difficult thing? 一番難しかったことは何？ I’ve heard both of you mentioned 2人とも実際海外に行った時に that when you actually went overseas, 2人とも実際海外に行った時に what you thought was good was tested a bit. 出来ると思っていた英語が試されたんだよね？ When I was in freshman in high school, 高校1年生の時に I went to study abroad for just one month, 1ヶ月ほど留学に行ったんです。 it was a homestay program. ホームステイプログラムで And I stayed with a host family ホストファミリーと滞在中に and I thought my English was just good, 自分の英語は上手って思っていたんです。 but I wanted to say salmon. 「サーモン」って言いたかったの。 Salmon, salmon, like the fish. 魚のサーモンね Canadian salmon ’cause I went to Canada. カナダに行ったから、カナダ産のサーモンね What type of food would you like trying in Canada? カナダでどんな食べ物を食べてみたい？って聞かれたから Okay. I was like, "I wanna try…" 「サーモンが食べたい」って言ったの.. They were like "what?" そしたら、「何？？」って言われちゃってw Salmon is English right? サーモンって英語だよね？ but they didn’t understand me, (so I was) like orange fish… 全然理解してくれなくて、「オレンジ色の魚」って言ったら "Orange fish!?" 「オレンジ色の魚！？」 But inside is! 中身がね！ That’s true. そうだね… Like "Nemo!?" 「ニモ食べたいの！？」って No! I don’t wanna a fried Nemo. No! 違う！ニモのフライなんて食べたくない！笑 But there’s so many things I wanted say, 言いたいことはたくさんあったんだけれど but I couldn’t. 言えなくて。 When the host mother directly talking to me slowly ホストマザーがゆっくり私に話しかけてくれている時は I would understand. 分かるんだけど But if they’re having a conversation, I couldn’t catch that. みんなが会話をしていたりすると、聞き取れなくて So that was like, ”oh my English is not good enough." 「私の英語ってまだ不十分なんだな」って思ったの。 But at the same time though, I kind of noticed that でも同時に、気づいたことは if I stay longer my English would improve. もっと長く滞在すれば、英語は上達するんだろうなって。 For example, like my host mother 例えば、ホストマザーが poured some orange juice in my glass, 私のコップにオレンジジュースを注いでくれて and then that’s like, "oh that’s too much. 「あ、もういいよ。これ以上飲めないから」 I don’t wanna drink anymore." って思ったんだけど But at the time I was, I didn’t know how to say, でもその瞬間は、それをどう言えばいいのか分からなくて like I just said, "ha, stop!" 「ストップ！」って言ったの。 Then I was looking at my host father, でもホストファーザーを見ると and he was like, "oh that’s good. Thank you, honey." 「もういいよ、ありがとう」って言っていて Ah. "That’s good." Okay. なるほど、That’s good.（もういいよ）って言うんだ。って But I didn’t learn that in Japan. それは日本では学ばないけれど But in Canada I learned that. カナダでは学ぶことができたから So if I stay longer period of time abroad, もっと海外に長期間滞在すれば then maybe I thought, you know, 英語が上達できるんだろうな、って思いましたね。 I could improve English more. 英語が上達できるんだろうな、って思いましたね。 So even though you felt like you weren’t good enough, 自分の英語が不十分だって思ったけれど you saw that you could get better. 上達できるってサインが見えたんだ。 Yeah, yeah, yeah. そうですね。 So that’s why I wanted to go study abroad だから人生のどこかで at some point in my life. 留学に行こうって思ったんです。 Mm. What about you guys? 2人はどう？ When I went to Hawaii, I was 19 years old ハワイに行ったのが19歳の時で and I had a lot of information in my brain, 脳の中には（英語の）情報はあったんだけれど but I didn’t know how to like say it out loud. それをどう口に出せばいいのか分からなくて。 This was the first time you went? それが初めての海外だよね？ First time, yeah. そう、初めて。 And I kept quiet and within three weeks ずっと静かにしてたの。そしたら3週間の間に there’s like words and phrases that I know that I can pick up. 単語やフレーズを聞き取り始めて。 And then after I came back from Hawaii, ハワイから帰ってきた後に I started looking things up 辞書で色々調べ出して and then a lot of things started connecting 色んな情報が繋がり始めて and then that’s when I realized I needed そこでちゃんと口で喋らないといけないんだって to start speaking out loud. 気づいたんです。 And so I did Hitorigoto 私のインタビュー動画でも話したように like I said in that the interview ひとりごとを始めたんです。 I do Hitorigoto too. 私もひとりごとする Right? It’s… やっぱり？ What do you talk about? 何を話すの？ What do you, what do you talk about to yourself? 自分に何を語りかけるの？ Well I was cooking and just, I’m like, 私の場合は、料理をしていて I’m gonna hold the knife. I’m gonna cut it. 包丁を持つ、とか、これを切るとか Practice mindfulness too. マインドフルネスの練習も出来るね。笑 Okay, so what you’re doing? 自分のしていることを話すの？ Hmm. Or like schedule for a day, それとか、私は1日のスケジュールとか like oh today I’m gonna do this and this and 今日はこれとこれをして after that, okay, let’s go. そのあとは、あれがある。よし、行こう！って And when you’re talking there’s like a lot of words 話してみると言えないことがたくさんあるんだよね that you can’t say. 話してみると言えないことがたくさんあるんだよね So you’re gonna look it up on Google, right? それをグーグルで調べるんだよね？ Yes, yes, yes. そうそう Well, do you ever get stuck like looking like everything up 調べながら、答えが見つからなくて and you’re not getting anywhere? 立ち往生しちゃったりしないの？ You can’t find a word and I will try to use… 単語が見つからなかったら、 That’s very important, isn’t it? そう、それが大事なんだよね！ Yeah, different expression and say it. 違う表現で言ってみるんです。 I say it but I still remember like I’m sure とりあえずそう言っておいて、 that there’s a better way to say it きっともっと良い言い方があるんだろう、って and if I remember it then I will look it up later on. 覚えていたら、後で調べるんです。 Okay, but first, do your best with じゃあ、まずは自分の力と語彙力で説明をしてみるんだ。 what you have and the vocabulary you have and explain it. じゃあ、まずは自分の力と語彙力で説明をしてみるんだ。 I used to look up everything 私は全て調べてましたね and then I try to make sentences out of that word. 調べて、調べたその単語で文章を作るんです。 And sometimes it’s formal, sometimes it’s informal. 時にはかしこまったり、砕けた言い方だったりあるので So I’ll look up like example sentences. 例文を調べてみるんです。 And then once you do that you realize そうすると、映画やドラマを見ている時に whenever you’re watching movies and dramas, そうすると、映画やドラマを見ている時に like that word comes out その単語が出てくると and I’m like, "oh you use that in this, that kind of situation!" 「これってこういう状況で使うんだ！」ってなるんだよね。 Once you recognize it, それに気づくと you’re like much more conscious when you do it, right? それをすると、もっと意識的になるんだよね？ Yeah. Just like you have, you bought a new car そう、新しい車を買ったとすると and you see it on the road and you start seeing a lot of things. 道路でその車が走っているのに気づくような感じ！ Yeah. Yeah. Irichan. なるほどね。イリちゃんは？ I started with the easiest step 一番簡単なステップから始めました which was repeating some simple phrases, 単純なフレーズ、イディオムをただ繰り返すものですね idioms making your own sentences would be harder. 自分の文章を作る方が難しくはなるので So I bought a book of… だから本を買って、 Like that! それとか So it’s a piece of cake. Thanks a lot. 「簡単だ。」「本当ありがと。」 That sounds great. 「それはいいね。」 I started with something easy 簡単なことから始めました so that I don’t have to correct them 決まり文句は自分で訂正する必要もないし and I started to realize that, oh for example like そしたら、気づいたことがあって I want to something something, 「〜したい」って言いたければ okay I will change the last part of the sentence その文の後半部分を変えてみようって and I tried that. 試してました。 So you guys enjoy the process. I think that’s huge. みんな学ぶ過程を楽しんでいたんだ。それって大きいよね。 And you have encouragement そして励ましがあること、 and then you talk to yourselves a lot. そして自分にたくさん話しかけること。 I mean that’s something you can do like anywhere, right? それってどこにいても出来ることだよね？ Talking to yourself? 自分に話しかけるって What are some other things maybe that you’ve done? 他にやったことってある？ You can’t just have talked to yourself and gone good, 自分に話しかけただけで、マスターした訳じゃないでしょ？ Right. そうね Did you sit down and like study? 机に向かって勉強はした？ Only in school. 学校でだけかな Only in school, yeah. 学校だけなんだ。 I think what’s weird is like when did you actually start 私が不思議に思うのが、いつから understanding things in English without 英語を日本語に訳さずに理解するようになったんだろう？って translating in Japanese? 英語を日本語に訳さずに理解するようになったんだろう？って I think that’s what makes it a big difference. Yeah. それが大きいと思うんだよね。 Do you notice that? 訳しているって気づくことはあるの？ Or you just gradually are kind of doing it それともだんだん訳さなくなっていったの？ You don’t translate it now? 今は訳さないんだよね？ Like you’re not translating what I say 私が言っていることは訳さないんだよね？ or we would not be able to talk this fast, right? じゃないとこの速さで会話なんてできないもんね Yeah. How do you do that? どうやってするの？ ‘Cause Osaru san probably translates. だって、おさるさんはきっと訳しているもん There’s no like one moment that you can pinpoint. この時！っていう瞬間は思い出せないんだけど The grammar structure, you kind of automatically like, 文法は、なんとなく自然と理解できるよね you understand it’s not… 文法は、なんとなく自然と理解できるよね If you are translating, that means 訳していたら、日本語の文法で you are thinking in Japanese grammar. 文章を考えていると思うけど But in English it’s different. 英語は違うから So a subject comes first and a verb comes next 主語が最初に来て、次に動詞が来て and then details later on. 詳細はその後に来て。 So that’s maybe you naturally understand that 英語の文法を自然と理解できるようになったら then maybe you can understand without translating. 訳さずに理解できるになるのかな？ Yeah, and I think once you start understanding きっと一度、英語で英語を理解し出したら in learning in English きっと一度、英語で英語を理解し出したら you probably learn a lot faster, a lot more. もっと速く、もっとたくさん学び始めるんだよね Right. Because that’s what I see with Pudding. プリンがまさにそれをしているんだよね。 Like she learns English through English. 英語を英語で学んでいるの。 If there’s a word she doesn’t know in a sentence, 文章の中で分からない単語があったら she’ll ask me what does that mean? 「それってどう言う意味？」って聞くから And then I would explain that to her in English, right? 私はそれを英語で説明するでしょ？ And so there’s just more learning and it’s faster too. 英語で英語を学ぶから、速くたくさん学べるんだよね。 So that’s like the biggest difference I see. それが2人の大きな違いかな ’cause like Pudding and Osaru san… だってプリンとおさるさんは… True. そうね Maybe that’s the key. それが鍵なのかもよ？ ‘Cause they didn’t use textbooks and they didn’t do this. みんなも教科書使って、机に向かって勉強してないから！ We don’t really learn grammar like 私たちは文法習わないからね native speakers don’t like sit there and learn grammar, really. ネイティブスピーカーは、座って文法は習わないけれど We understand it though. 理解はできるからね。 Once you hear so many phrases, フレーズをたくさん聞くと you know that that’s the structure. それが文章の構造ってわかるから So they kind of learned that kind of in a way 多分みんなはネイティブスピーカーが学んだのと that native speakers learn. 似た形で学んだから That’s probably why you guys speak so well. きっとこんなに英語が話せるんだろうね。 And what’s something for pronunciation that you did? 発音に関しては何をしたの？ Like pronunciation is something 発音はたくさんの人が頑張っていることだと思うけど that you know a lot of people wanna work on. 発音はたくさんの人が頑張っていることだと思うけど The other day we were talking online 先日、オンラインで話してたんですけど and we found out that we have something interesting in common. 僕たち、面白い共通点があることが分かったんです。 Another!? 他にも？ We all play the instrument. みんな楽器やるんですよね Oh! あら！ You played the piano. Piano. ピアノやるでしょ。ピアノしてた I did the organ 私はオルガンやってて And I started to play the piano recently. Oh, 僕は最近ピアノを始めて Oh, recently? Yes. 最近なの？ Well you’ve always done music though. 音楽は長いことやってきたよね Like you’ve always like music, ずっと音楽は好きだったもんね but you guys probably are like ear people. みんな耳の人なんだ Yeah, yeah, maybe そうだね。かもね？ Auditory. Take things in and probably like 聴覚が良くて、聴いたものを and be able to say that, the way you hear it. 聴いたそのまま発音できる So do you just keep practicing じゃあ正しく発音できるまで until you feel like you’re saying it? ずっと練習するの？ Like you’re saying it, right. 正しく発音できるまで？ The TH sound? TH? THの発音とかね？ And the accent too. アクセントもね It’s not… コーヒーじゃないんだよね "Coffee" Where you put the emphasis. どこに強調をつけるかね And that’s a lot of listening too, right? それってたくさんのリスニング量だよね？ Listening, mimicking…mimicking. リスニングもだし、真似もそう。 and the tongue movement. 舌の動きもね Did you have like someone that you copied? 誰か真似してた人はいるの？ Like did you have a specific person? お手本にしてた人とか？ I mimicked many people, so I don’t know. 僕は色んな人真似しすぎて分かんないです Chris Tucker. Chris Tucker!? クリス・タッカーとか。クリス・タッカー？ "I’m in the house!" 「俺の登場だ！」みたいな So that’s where you get your like kinda comedic DJ. そこからコメディー系のDJの影響を受けたんだ！ He’s a comedian. An American comedian. Yes. クリス・タッカーってアメリカのコメディアンね And grammar. You didn’t sit and do this. それと文法！座って勉強したんじゃなくて So you just learned grammar 聞こえてくる文章のパターンで文法も学んだの？ through hearing patterns basically. 聞こえてくる文章のパターンで文法も学んだの？ But in the school I did. 学校では習いましたよ Yes, in school you did. 学校ではね。 That’s what I did. 私も Did that help what you did in school? 学校で学んだものは役に立った？ Yeah, yeah, yeah. Definitely. もちろん Because a lot of people go through the same schooling みんなも同じ教育制度を受けてるからね you guys did. みんなも同じ教育制度を受けてるからね So was it that you were doing other things でも他のこともしていたから so it linked up and and it helped that way? それがリンクして、上達に繋がったの？ Right. Try to use English. そうですね、英語を使うこと Use English. I learn and I use it. 学んで使うことだよね So don’t just learn English, 英語は学ぶだけじゃないですよ、 use English. 英語を使うこと！ Tried to build a lot input and インプットをひたすらして and then output came when I was 19 so. 私は19歳の時にアウトプットをすることができたので Well, I mean that’s what kids do, right? 子どももそうだもんね？ They, they don’t talk for two years 2年間喋らないけれど and they’re just like absorbing, absorbing, absorbing. しっかり吸収してるんだよね And then they’re like, you know. そしたらいきなり喋り出す Silent period. 沈黙期 Silent period! 沈黙期！ Do you find yourself different when you’re speaking English? 英語を話す時の自分って違うと思う？ You know, people say the personality changes when you’re… 英語を話していると、性格が変わるって言うけれど It’s not, I don’t think it’s the personality 私は性格じゃなくて I think it’s just there is personality in the language, 言語自体に性格があるから so it just forces you to change. 強制的に性格を変えられているんだと思うんだけれど But do you find yourself feeling different? みんなは性格が変わるなって思う？ Like Pudding chan is sassy in English, right? プリンちゃんは英語だとお姉さん態度になるよね Yes. Much sassier in English. うん。英語だとかなり笑 I think just like that. そんな感じだと思うな Like you can say a lot more things in English 英語だともっと色んなことを言えちゃうんだよね than in Japanese. 日本語に比べて Like you don’t really hold back what you’re thinking. 話すことを考えている時に、そこまで抑えなくていい Like you just voice that out 声に出せちゃう and then everybody would react to me. そしたらみんなが反応してくれて And like the conversations that like make it more fun, 会話がもっと盛り上がるし like become more fun. 楽しくなるような？ So you’re more open? Yeah. もっとオープンになるって感じ？そうだね And outgoing, I’d rather speak English than in Japanese. もっと社交的になれるから、日本語より英語の方がいいな… Yes, I know. 知ってる。笑 Do you guys feel the same way? みんなもそう感じる？ Are you more comfortable in English or in Japanese? 英語と日本語どっちが話しやすい？ In a certain topic I’m comfortable in English, トピックによっては英語の方が話しやすいけど but you know, my Japanese is way more 私は日本語のレベルの方が英語レベルより better than my English. 遥かに上だから So like in my case, Japanese definitely more comfortable. 私の場合は、日本語の方が話しやすいかな。 But I can say that when I speak English, でも言えるのは、英語を話していると I can like say said, like more, be more open, I feel like. もっとオープンに言いたいことが言える気がするかな？ Say more things. More casual… kind of. 色んなことが言えて、でもカジュアルで Like casually you can state your opinions. 気さくに自分の意見を言える気がするな。 I’m more comfortable in Japanese. 日本語のが楽ですね What about expressing yourself though? 自分を表現することに関してはどう？ Like is there something that…? そんなときない？ In that case, English is more comfortable. それなら、英語の方が楽ですね Yeah, I can be more, you know, extrovert, outgoing? Yeah. なんか、もっと外交的になれますね And I can be myself. 自分になれる感じが So you’re more comfortable in Japanese じゃあイリちゃんは日本語の方が楽だけれど but you can actually be more yourself in English. 英語の方が自分らしくいられるんだ Yeah. そうですね I understand that, yeah. それ共感できる Which is really, really interesting. それってすごくおもしろいよね Yeah, yeah, yeah. そうだね I think it’s like a cultural thing too, right? 文化的な部分もあるよね？ Not, maybe not just the language. 言語だけのことじゃなくて It’s kind of like when you meet someone in a group 例えると、誰かに会って and then there’s someone that you don’t know the name like 名前の知らない人がいて ah, konichiwa, kind of like you can’t just ask kind of directly, 「あ、こんにちは」とは言うけれど、直接聞けないんだよね ’cause you feel kind of rude to ask the name again. また名前はなんですか？って聞くと失礼だから I don’t know what I’m talking about. なにが言いたいのか分かんなくなっちゃった…笑 In English, you can be like 英語だと "what was your name again?" 「名前なんだっけ？」 Yeah! "Have we met?" 「会ったことあるっけ？」 Right, right? そう！ Have we met? Like it’s easy. 「会ったことあるっけ？」って楽なんだよね but in Japanese it’s kind of like you have to be polite. でも日本語だと、礼儀正しく聞かないといけないから Not to say Americans are not polite. アメリカ人が礼儀正しくない訳じゃなくてねw But I guess Japanese people are indirect about things that 日本人は遠回しにしなくても良いことに対して like don’t even need to be indirect. 遠回しになっちゃうってことだよね。 It’s just the language though. 言語の性格なんだよね I don’t know if it’s Japanese people or the language. 日本人だからかなのか、言語なのか分からないけれど I feel like the Japanese language is like that? 日本語っていう言語がそうなのかな？ Makes you like that? そうさせちゃうのかな？ ’cause obviously when you speak English, you’re not like that. だって英語を話していると、そうじゃないもんね Do you think if Osaru san speaks English better and おさるさんが英語を話せたとして and then you could talk to Osaru san in English, ちかさんもおさるさんに英語で話せたら you could be more direct? もっと直接色々言えると思う？ He’s not there yet. おさるさんはまだかな？w I’m direct to him in either language. 私は日本語でも英語でもハッキリww But isn’t that interesting because Irichan and Ayami san でもおもしろいよね、イリちゃんもあやみさんも are able to say more things in Japanese. 日本語の方がもっと言えるのに No more words in Japanese, これ以上日本語で言えないことがないのに yet they feel more comfortable and more themselves 英語の方が話しやすくて、もっと自分らしくいれるんだよね speaking English. 英語の方が話しやすくて、もっと自分らしくいれるんだよね That’s really interesting. それってすごくおもしろいよね And that’s probably another reason why you like English それもきっと英語が好きな一つの理由だよね because the more you can speak it, 話せれば話せるほど maybe you feel more like kind of liberated もっと解放された気分になって and you can like say things more もっと表現できて and maybe you liked that culture of conversation. その会話文化が好きなのかもね？ It’s very different than in Japan 日本と全然違うから。 and I think a lot of people do. きっとたくさんの人が思っていると思うな And you mentioned something earlier about, さっき言っていたけれど Oh the thing you didn’t like about the Japanese culture was 日本の文化で好きじゃないのは、 apologizing all the time. いつも謝っていることって！ Well you call your server, you say Sumimasen. サーバーを呼ぶときに、「すみません」 When you wanna ask something, you say Sumimasen. 何か質問がある時も、「すみません」って Like if you wanna ask questions, you can just ask questions, 質問がしたければ、すればいいし you know, like, I didn’t like that part of Japanese culture. （謝らないといけない）日本の文化が好きじゃなかったんです。 It’s like, it creates barrier. 壁を作ってしまう気がして Like there’s no, like in English, there’s no barrier, 英語だと壁はなくて so you can just be direct. And like… 直接言えちゃうから Which is really interesting because I made a video a long time ago おもしろいのが、だいぶ前にオーストラリア出身の with Gordo from Australia, if you guys remember. ゴードと動画を撮ったんだけれど、覚えているかな？ And he said the exact opposite. ゴードは真逆のことを言ってたの！ He liked Japanese because it allows you to create barriers. 彼は壁を作れる日本の文化が好きって Oh well. そうなの？ It’s like the other way around, right? 全く逆でしょ？ Interesting! おもしろい！ In culture where it’s harder to probably create barriers, 壁が作りにくい文化にいると maybe Japanese is convenient 日本は暮らしやすいのかも because you can put that barrier there. だって壁を作れちゃうから But we’re from a culture where it’s, you know, でも日本の壁のありすぎる文化からすると there are a ton of barriers. でも日本の壁のありすぎる文化からすると So I think we like the fact 壁を崩して、減らせるっていうことが that we can take some of them out. 良いって感じるのかもね So it’s all perspective, 観点の違いなんだけれど but it’s really, really interesting. すごくおもしろい！ But we all want what we can’t have, right? 手に入らないものを欲しがっちゃうんだよね？ Like the grass is greener on the other side. 『隣の芝生はいつも青い』ってね But anyways, okay, so that was a really interesting とにかく、3人のみんなとすごく興味深い会話ができました！ conversation that I had with these amazing three. とにかく、3人のみんなとすごく興味深い会話ができました！ And lastly, a little bit of maybe advice for everyone 最後にちょっとしたアドバイスとか that’s like maybe something that you can do right away みんながすぐに始められることがあれば、聞きたいな that might help them or… みんながすぐに始められることがあれば、聞きたいな I would say read articles out loud. 私は記事を声に出して読むことかな Whatever articles you’re interested in, 興味のある記事ならなんでも you can just read it out loud 声に出して読むと and then you’re gonna catch yourself 読めない単語があることに気づくと思うんだけど not being able to read the words. 読めない単語があることに気づくと思うんだけど That means you don’t know the words それは、その単語を知らないというサイン、 and you can’t probably catch the words whenever you hear it. そして聞いても聞き取れないと思うので So my stance is that you read articles 私のアドバイスは記事を読んで and then just look up words （分からなければ）辞書を引いて and then just build your vocabulary 自分の語彙力を築いて and practice with your tongue. 舌を使って発音の練習をすることかな Yeah, I mean there’s lots of audio books lately too. 最近はオーディオブックもたくさんあるし So you could probably read a passage 1段落読んでみたり、 and listen to a passage. 1段落聞いてみたりとかできるよね Yeah. And then say it out loud そう！それを声に出して読んで and then just compare yourself with the actual audio. 自分の声と音声を比べてみてもいいし And you can choose the topic that you’re interested in. 自分の興味のあるトピックを選べるんだもんね？ Irichan, do you have something? イリちゃんは何かアドバイスある？ I like finding beautiful quotes. 僕は、美しい名言を見つけるのが好きで Uh huh. Like motivational? やる気が出るような？ Yes. Motivational quotes. はい。モチベ系の名言 Google your favorite celebrity or something 「好きな有名人」とかと「名言」ってググると and space quotes. 「好きな有名人」とかと「名言」ってググると And you will encounter some beautiful quotes. 美しい名言と出会えるかと English is a language and they may give you motivation. 英語は言語ですから。そしたらやる気が出るかも。 And if you find one, go get Chika san’s journal 見つけたら、ちかさんのジャーナルをゲットして and write it down on it. 書き込んでみてください。 That might change your life. 人生が変わるかも You can learn the culture too. 文化も学べるもんね ’cause there’s lots of things 日本語で表せないことがたくさんあるから that you wouldn’t say in Japanese. 日本語で表せないことがたくさんあるから That’s a good one. Thank you. いいですね、ありがとう Maybe voice journal is good, too. ボイスジャーナルもいいかも！ Like you can record yourself. 自分の声を録音して Start from a minute, maybe from like 90 seconds 1分〜90秒でもいいから and you talk to yourself but recording. 録音して自分に話しかけてみること。 Many people say like, 多くの人は "oh, I don’t like to hear my own voice." 「自分の声なんて聞きたくない」って言うけれど But you have to 聞かないと。 ’cause everybody else would listen to your voice. だってみんなはあなたの声を聞いているんだから That’s true. 確かに！ And if you listen, ugh like, you get cringey sometimes. そして聞いてみると、恥ずかしくなっちゃうんだけど Cringy. Cringy. 「恥ずかしい、嫌だ！」ってね Like you’re like, "oh, my pronunciation is totally off." 「もう、発音全然間違ってるし！」って Like, oh it makes… 「あー、同じ文章ばっかり繰り返してる！」とか I use same sentences over and over again! 「あー、同じ文章ばっかり繰り返してる！」とか Then you will realize like what you need to work on. そしたら、何が自分に欠けているか分かってくるんです。 So that is something that you can do just from now. それが今から始められることかな Take your phone and you just record. 携帯を手に取って、録音する Usually if you were in an online English 普通だったら、オンライン英語とか or conversation practice, 英会話の練習をしていると mainly teacher leads your conversation 先生が会話の主導権を握ってくれて and then you will just answering questions 生徒さんは質問に答えるだけなんだよね and then it’s one word, a sentence. 1単語、1文章でいいけれど But if you wanna hold a conversation, 会話をしたいのであれば you need to talk more like two or three sentences, 2〜3文章は話さないといけない more, even 5, 6, 10. もっと、5、6、10文ぐらい For that you need practice. そうするためには、練習が必要だから If you wanna bring that to the next level, そのレベルに達するには then maybe talk about a minute. 1分話してみる A minute is not short. 1分って決して短くはないからね。 So yeah, you have to talk a lot of things. 色んなことを話さないといけないし。 And if you can speak as fast as you can そして出来れば、なるべく速く、 as much as you can in a minute. なるべく多く1分間に話してみる。 And then you tend to make more mistakes. そうすると、もっと間違いもしがちなんだよね。 You know, the past tense, all that kind of grammar 文章を書いているときに比べて、 when you answering questions, you know, writing 過去形が抜けていたり、間違っていたりするんだけれど That’s so true. そうだね But in speaking, you do all the things at the same time. でも話していると、全てを同時にやっているんだよね You need to care about your pronunciation, grammar, 発音にも文法、単語、 vocabulary, the topic. トピックにも気を配らないといけない So like all those at once, and then you make mistakes. 全てを同時にやった上で、間違えちゃう。 Probably in this speech I make a lot of mistakes. このインタビューで私がすでに知っていることでさえ The things that I already know. 間違えていたりするだろうけれど But that’s how you practice speaking でもそうやってスピーキングって練習するんだよね so that’s what you can do right now. それが今すぐできることかな Yeah, I mean you can know a lot of things たくさん物事は知っていても but whether you can use it might be different. 使うとなれば違うもんね Yeah, different, different. そう、違うの。 You practice using English, not just, you know, input. インプットだけではなくて、英語を使って練習すること A lot of good advice. 良いアドバイスがたっぷり！ And you know, a lot of you guys say like, oh yeah, みなさんに言われるんです、 I wanna speak like you Chika chan, I wanna be like you. 「ちかちゃんみたいに話せるようになりたい！」って But it’s like really them that you wanna be like, でも実際なりたいのはこのみんなだから！ because you know they grew up in Japan だって、日本で育って and they, you know, start out speaking Japanese dominantly 圧倒的に日本語を話してきたのに and then through their own like motivation and hard work 自分自身のやる気と頑張り、継続で and persistence, they speak English so, so fluently. ここまで流暢に英語を話せるようになったんだから！ It’s amazing! 本当にすごい！ We actually have not talked this much in English… 実はこんなに英語で会話をしたのは初めてで before, this was like a lot of English today すごい英語の量だったので and I realized even more how great their English is. もっとみんなの英語力に感動させられています。 So I mean there’s a lot to learn from them. みんなから学ぶことはたくさんあると思うので So hopefully there’s some inspiration for you guys. みなさんの刺激になったらとても嬉しいです！ You might be overwhelmed by this. 圧倒されちゃった方もいるかもしれませんが But they also have taken the same steps 3人とも同じ段階を通って and they started where you guys are. みなさんと同じところから始めているので So don’t be afraid. Just yeah, making mistakes. 怖がらず、間違いをし続けて We made tons of mistakes. We still make mistakes. 私たちもたくさん間違いをしてきたし、未だに間違える Yeah. So they’re all a part of C-place. そう、みんなC-placeのメンバーなんです。 I knew Irichan before then, but I met Hana イリちゃんはその前から知り合いだったけれど、はなちゃんと and Ayami san through C-place あやみさんはC-place を通して出会って and we do C-study, which is Osaru san’s club C-studyっていうおさるさんの to learn English in a more fun way. 楽しく英語を学ぶっていうクラブで Find people to learn with ’cause it can get lonely.
